Lata Mangeshkar was born in Indore, Madhya Pradesh to classical singer and theatre actor Dinanath Mangeshkar and his second wife Shudhmati Mangeshkar. The Mangeshkars were a middle-class Maharashtrian family, and were Saraswat Brahmins by caste. Lata was the firstborn child, to be followed by siblings Hridayanath Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Usha Mangeshkar and Meena Mangeshkar.
